Top Ten Tips from the Savvy Blogging Party

Here are the top ten tips from the Savvy Blogging party according to me (Saving Money Plan):

  1. Keep it personal. Don’t shy away from telling personal stories – in fact – do it as much as possible! Telling your readers about your life (and not just sharing deals) is essential.
  2. Be yourself. It’s okay to learn from other bloggers you love, but make sure that your blog is just that – YOUR blog about YOU!
  3. Monetize slowly if you’re a newbie. Too much too fast can overwhelm any new blogger – and not lead to great results anyway;(
  4. Networking with other bloggers is critical. Other bloggers are your friends, and try to make as many friends as possible.
  5. If you’re a blogger, think of ways you can help other bloggers – then make an offer they can’t refuse! The first way to connect with another blogger is not to ask them for something – instead, offer something up!
  6. If you have *any* inkling that your blog might be a big part of your  life, start early on with Word Press and your own hosting.
  7. Guest post like crazy. I’ll say it again: guest post guest post guest post guest post…..THEN find someone else to let you guest post guest post guest post guest post … and THEN go guest post guest post guest post some more…
  8. Update frequently! (Updating should be like bathing – once a day, no matter what;))
  9. Social media is your friend. Don’t just blog – use Twitter and Facebook as well;) Try Digg and Reddit. See what works for you and what social network drives traffic to your site best.
  10. Blog because you love to blog. (That’s always the key to success, right?)

  1. Why do you recommend WordPress over Blogger? I’ve had my Blogspot since late 2008 and really like it, but I’m still working to make it aesthetically pleasing and easy to read, while trying to attract followers. I’ve only added Google AdSense, at this point, to monetize, but would really love to give the Blog more…

Check it out…I’d welcome suggestions/feedback from ANYONE!!! I’m open and want to use this blog as a blessing to other Moms/Women struggling to remain sincere and real about life, while maintaining our sassiness!

      Hey Serena –

I find that as your blog gets bigger just the features on Word Press are just so much better. Literally I had 5 blogger blogs before and definitely loved them – but once I switched to word press I realized how much more professional it all was. And having my own domain name is GREAT!

Great recap… I think I must have missed the part about Guest Posting during the party – I got “kicked off” by Twitter at one point due to the overload of “status updates”. This is definitely an area I need to work on! I’m also starting to explore WP and having a domain name of my own.

Great recap! The twitter party was moving so fast I just gave up. Couldn’t read a thing. I’ve really been contemplating changing to wordpress but I’m just scared to mess it up. Do you recommend hiring someone to do it for you or is it a DIY project?

Hey Christine – I recommend hiring it out for cheap if you can. It’s worth the headache. I have a great gal to recommend if you want. Contact me at savingmoneyplan (at) gmail (dot) com and I’ll tell you about her!

  6. Came from TTT. Great list!! I’ll be at blissdom to, so I look forward to meeting you!

This is such great information! I’ve been blogging for almost 2 years and keep debating to switch to WP, having my own domain, style, content, a “niche”, etc. It’s never ending! But like Christine, I’m completely freaked out and I don’t want to spend gobs of money. I would LOVE to attend a conference (like Blissdome or Blogher) to get information, knowledge and help, but not sure it’s worth it for a “little” blog like mine. However, I would LOVE to branch out, expand, do product reviews (but not solely that), have advertising, do guest posts, again – etc, but I’m overwhelmed! AHHHH! Sorry to vent! This is such an awesome post and I love your blog!

Hey Krista – I know – it’s so hard to figure it all out and wade through the thousands of choices out there! I’ll be starting to do a series on blogging here where I’m hoping to answer *some* of the questions;)
