The 25 Cent Chicken McNugget

If you’ve been following this blog for awhile, you know that I spend a lot of time in airports. Given that, I am always on the look-out for cheap airport food. Over the years, by stand-by favorites have been the 99 cent side salad at McDonald’s alongside another 99 cent item (like a cheeseburger). For 2 bucks – I can have a great, small meal that beats any $12 dinner you can get at the food court stand next door.

Last week, though, I noticed an interesting new ad outside a McDonald’s, and I couldn’t help but be VERY surprised but what I think may be a poor advertising choice.

As the sign declared – McDonald’s was having a sale. Each chicken mcnugget cost exactly 25 cents. Yup, 25 cents. Normally, a box of six costs more than $2.50. Although 25 cents each is by no means a lot of money, I found that when faced with the thought of spending 25 whole cents for just ONE chicken mcnugget, it all of a sudden seemed, well, expensive to go and buy a whole box.

What do you think?

Does having a “sale” for a 25 cent chicken mcnugget sound cheap to you?

  1. 25 cents does sound like a lot for McNuggets until you realize that means you get 10 for just $2.50 and then it seems like a good deal.

I love going to Buffalo Wild Wings for 50 cent boneless wings on Thursday’s…it sounds like a horrible deal until you realize you get 8 wings for $4.00 which is a great deal compared to the regular price of $7 or $8 bucks.

I think McDonald’s should rethink their advertising strategy though…it does seem expensive! Doesn’t their value menu always have 4 nuggets for $1?

Hey Theresa – I don’t know about the value menu at $1…I remember that in the past though – but have some feeling that if I’d seen it lately I would’ve ordered it…;) I’m all about the dollar items…

    Yes mcd’s always has 4 for a $…
so your sale price of 25 cents is actual real price!!!
No matter what way you look at it…..
25 cents is still a good deal!

I think .25cents for 1 nugget sounds like a lot to pay. On the other hand is airport usually higher than going thru the drive-thru? If you look it like that, you are probably still getting a good deal. My problem is food is just expensive. If you don’t plan, use coupons, and be a savvy shopper; food will cost you a bundle everywhere!!!!

I think that this is a poor advertising strategy. That is why everything always says 4/$1 or 10/$10 rather than $.25 each or $1.00 each. when you advertise the price as an individual price it always looks like you are paying more when in reality you may be paying the same or even less. This is why advertising the traditional way with the whole 4/$1 is so scucessful! but yes $.25 for a mcdonalds chicken nugget is way too much….especially since they are made out of who knows what parts of the chicken. ick. lol
