I’m excited to be jumping on the bandwagon for the Eating from the Pantry Challenge.
What is the Eating from the Pantry Challenge?
Money Saving Mom and Fish Mama are working to encourage you to shop less and eat more (well, maybe not exactly). The idea is that we all have so much food in our pantries already that we regularly forget about. Instead, we end up shopping and spending more when we don’t really need to. This month, the goal is to try and use what you have on hand, which will force you to be a little bit more creative than usual and will help you save money in the process.
How to Set Your Goal for the Challenge:
If you’re taking part, you should make sure and set a few goals for yourself in the process. To set good goals for yourself for the Eating from the Pantry challenge, make sure your goals are:
- Personal (don’t just copy other people’s goals)
- Attainable
- Challenging
The Saving Money Plan Goals for the Eating from the Pantry Challenge:
Here are my goals for the challenge:
- Save 25% on my grocery budget in the month of January by using the tips gained in learning to coupon
- Shop once every week instead of twice (this goal has the huge bonus of contributing to Goal #1 in the process, since studies show that the more times you go grocery shopping, the more you will spend!)
- Try one new recipe every week
- Plant two new spices in my garden to work toward the long-term goal of more *free* cooking ingredients
So there you have it. With this Eating from the Pantry Challenge I’ll be shopping less, cooking more, and more than anything else thinking creatively about what to cook with what I have on hand. And saving money all the way.

I love the idea of planting spices. I really need to do that and I’m probably out of excuses at this point. I’d like to get some veggies in the ground too but maybe not in January!
Kristen – Now I just have to figure out which new spices to plant. I would love to do curry but how do I use the leaves??
I am participating in the challenge too. Best wishes for a successful pantry eating month ;o)
Blessings,
Courtney

This will be a great challenge! I hope you meet all your goals.
Thanks Shelly – are you taking part?

I am thinking about participating in this one too. Great advice on how to set your goals. Good Luck.
Thanks Jenny! Where do you blog?
I am excited to be part of the Challenge too! I am spending my week off from school to get myself ready (I’m a preschool teacher) by getting my recipes together, going through my freezer & making my shopping lists for the next week. Can’t wait to read about how you’re doing as the month progresses
Please leave a link Lisa, I’d love to follow along with others and see how it’s going for everyone!
Good luck with the challenge! I like the idea of trying a new recipe every week… I’m hoping to try a few new ones myself!
This should be a fun challenge!
Good luck everyone with the challenge. I just saw this today and I absolutely love the idea of eating out of the pantry. We just had to get a new freezer because my husband got 2 deers this year and we didn’t have any place to put it. Between that and my overstocked pantry we could probably go for 2 months with only having to buy perishables. This is going to be so much fun!
