Coupon Class Week 2 (1/25/10)

by Claire on January 25, 2010

So we’re now in week 2 of the ten week couponing course. This week you’ll be getting nearly $50 in FREE items at Walgreens – so make sure to take part! Want to learn more about this course? For a review of week 1, go here. If you haven’t yet joined, sign up here! The couponing class is delivered every Monday to your inbox.

Week 2 Assignment

Walgreens uses a system called Register Rewards, which are similar to ECBs at CVS. Register Rewards print out when you make your purchases and the cashier gives them to you when you get your receipt. You can use them on your next transaction as if they were cash. However, if you use a register reward to buy something, you do NOT get change back.

The biggest difference between a register reward and an ECB is that a register reward cannot be used for the same product – or the same brand. So, let’s say you do a deal where get $2 in Register Rewards for buying Nivea lotion. You cannot then use that same Register Reward to buy more Nivea. Instead, you’d have to use it to buy another product. It can be confusing, but we’ll start simple this week.

At Walgreens this week you can get the following things FREE (and a couple for only $1 dollar!):

1.

Buy $30 worth of select digestive health products and get $10 in Register Rewards

  • Buy six Benefiber Kiwi Stick Packs ($5 each)
  • Use six $2/1 printable coupons HERE
  • Use one (one coupon will work for six products) $2/1 Benefiber Walgreens store coupon from Diabetes and You Magazine – you can find this in the front of the store, at the pharmacy, or just ask. This will deduct $12, or $2 for each of the six items.
  • You’ll get back $10 in register rewards at the register
  • = Better than FREE –> You make $4!

2.

Buy Olay Quench Body Lotion ($7.99) and get Free Olay Quench in shower body lotion ($4.99 value)

  • Use one $2/1 from the 1/17 Proctor & Gamble (”P&G”) coupon insert in the Sunday Paper (if you have started to save coupons already you may have this from last week)
  • Use one $1/1 from the 1/17 PG insert (if you have started to save coupons already you may have this from last week)
  • Submit your receipt via mail for a rebate that makes it FREE: Olay Quench Body Lotion Rebate
  • =Better than FREE –> up to $3 money-maker if you have the coupons!

3.

Buy $10 or more in select Robitussin or Dimetapp 2/$10 and get $3 in Register Rewards

  • Use the $2/1 Robitussin printable HERE
  • Use the $2/1 Dimetapp printable HERE
  • You’ll get back $3 in Register Rewards printed at the register
  • = $1.50 each if you purchase two

4.

Buy select Kelloggs Cereal and Special K Bars 2/$5 and get a $2 Register Reward when you buy two

  • Use the $1.50/2  printable HERE
  • Use the $1/2 from the 1/3 Red Plum Sunday paper coupon insert (if you have this)
  • You’ll get back $2 in Register Rewards printed at the register
  • =as little as $1.25 each after coupon and RR! (a very good price for cereal)

5.

Reach Prevent toothbrush $0.99 after in ad coupon

  • Use the $1/1 from the 10/18 Red Plum Coupon insert (it’s okay if you don’t have this one saved, it’s just to show you what you can get by saving your coupons!)
  • Use the B1G1 coupon from the 1/3 RP insert (I hope you have this one!)
  • 2 FREE toothbrushes

6.

Carefree pantiliners 16 pack $1.99

  • Use either $1/1 printable HERE or $1/1 printable HERE
  • =$0.99 each after coupon

7.

Coffee-Mate liquid 16oz on sale BOGO or 2/$2.49

  • Use two $1/1 printable coupons HERE
  • =$0.49 for two after coupons

If you have all the coupons this week and are able to get all the deals, this is what you will spend:

  • Spend $21 out of pocket + tax
  • Get $15 back in Register Rewards
  • Get $7.99 back in an Olay Rebate

= To get all 7 items you will spend any tax minus $1!

Steps on How to Get the Items:

1. At home, print out all the printable coupons you need.

2. At the store, make your purchases and hand the cashier your printable coupons. If you buy all these items, you will spend out about $21-$25 after the printable coupons you give the cashier plus taxes.

3. The cashier will ring you up and will give you $15 in Register Rewards.

4. Go home and send in the mail-in rebate for the Olay lotion and get another $7.99 back!

Hi, just a newbie to all this couponing and ecb’s…
I signed on a bit late for course, so I’ve just received my ECB card at CVS, haven’t yet accessed any deals at CVS….however, on the application it asks and answers the ?…”How do I get my extra care bucks? Answer: “Every three months your Extra Bucks will print on your register receipt.” My question is: Are they referring to the 2% amount earned on all purchases? They are not clear on this and your course indicates we receive ECBs immediately….please clear this up..thanks Dee

Claire Reply:

Hey Dee – Yes, they mean the 2% comes every three months. The regular ones print right away!

I didn’t find the Benefiber coupon you pointed in this post. The link took me to coupons.com and I didn’t enter a zip code, but I didn’t find the coupon. Any pointers?

Well, I had my husband go and pick up Kerasol and he had 2 $1.oo register reward bucks + plus 1.00 Kerasol cpn and WALGREEN’s manager refused to stack the coupn with the register reward bucks, insisting he had to buy at least 2 other items….well that just sucks! Here I thought I had done well, and not really!!! Dee

Okay Dee – Here’s rule #1 when your Register Reward for some reason doesn’t work – you need to have as many items as you have coupons or register rewards. So get used to picking up really cheap “fillers” if you need to – like 19 cent candies. My favorite fillers are cheap food items that I will use that week;)

Yeah, I’m not finding the Benefiber coupon either. Is there somewhere else to get it? Got my CVS extra care card today, though!

trying to figure out the math on #1 an I keep coming up with $22 back on the $30 purchase?
and after my wagreens visit today found out buying the cereal that you can only do one deal at a time to get the RR… tried to buy 6 boxes and had to do each one individually to get 3RR or all at once would only produce 1RR
also on the b1g1 with 2 coupons for the creamer, the manager refused and said they cannot do it wether the register allows it or not because that would be using two coupons on one product since they are giving me one free which is stealing from the manufacturer and they cant do it! hmmmmm

I did the Benefiber deal and a Men’s Pert Plus deal (free after coupons and register rewards). Worked beautifully! Have already done the Olay rebate and should be receiving it any day. Forgot do do the Reach deal so I’ll be back to Walgreens…

All of this scenario worked fine except the Benefiber one. I bought 6 for$30 and received a $5 RR. The manger rerang the transaction and still it gave me a $5 RR. When I got home I called the catalina company 1-888-8Coupon . They took my information and told me to fax a copy of my receipt and they would send the other $5 RR to make it $10. Hopefully I will receive it soon.

Thanks for a great scenario.

I am really getting into this…thank you for offering this free course. I spent almost all day on Sunday scouring through ads and coupons, though…I hope to get myself to just rely on other people’s efforts through the blogs I subscribe to in order to cut down on the time I am spending on this. I work full time and have 2 kids, so my spare time is very much limited. Any tips or suggestions for me to cut down on my time spent matching coupons and sales?

Thanks so much!!!

Claire Reply:

Brooke – I would just concentrate on reading a blog that tells you what to do and THEN looking for the coupons you need.
Don’t cut any coupons on your own (just store them). Then when a blogger tells you a specific coupon you need you just go into your box or drawer and search for the coupon from that week’s dated insert.

thanks for the info and the link to coupons.
I have been stockpiling and couponing for a while and at times I think I could use all the help I can get.

Again, Walgreens is not conveniently located for me, either. I’m on Disability and don’t drive. I have a housekeeper who comes to my home 3 times a week and because of gas prices we usually stick to 2 different stores in my area.
I’m ever hopeful, though, that I will learn tips and tricks at the stores I already shop at..

Thank you for all the help, I have been getting the hang of it but just wish I would have started earlier in saving since I need to buy a toothbrush and could have 2 free ones!!!! errr… Also I have seen a new coupon on coupons.com and print it thinking there will be a good deal and don’t use it… That’s something I have to become better at knowing which one is good to print or not!

Thank you so much!

Sally January 27, 2010 at 4:34 am

I just went to Walgreens and try to get the Benefiber. The Assistant Manager in charge doesn’t let me use all 6 manufacturer’s coupons. He said it stated on the coupon “One Coupon Per Purchase Only on product(s) indicated.” So, he advised that he only let me use one out of six manufacturer’s coupon. What should I do with this?

[Reply]

Claire Reply:

Hey Sally – That’s just wrong!!!

You can use one coupon per product.

These managers can be so frustrating because they often know less about coupons than we do!

[Reply]

wendi January 27, 2010 at 5:53 pm

I got the same thing today at Safeway. Man did it make me mad, They were trying to tell me I was doubling coupons which I was not.. What to do you tell them in the case this happens?? They told me they’d let me use this time but never again, SO dumb!

Joy January 27, 2010 at 8:17 pm

We don’t have a Walgreens anywhere near us (closest is more than 30 minutes away), so I couldn’t do this week’s deal. However, I did print the $1 Scott’s coupon from coupons.com. CVS had a 3-day sale on Scott’s paper towels for $4.99, so I used my coupon and paid with ECBs!
